Did Congressman Roy Blunt Imply That A “Monkey” Was In The White House?

September 22, 2009

RoyBluntAs much as I appreciate a good joke, sometimes it is important to wade in the deep waters of prudence.  This is especially true in politics.  However in friendly confines, we forget to apply our sense of decorum, and can indulge in a bit of off-color banter.  Is this what Congressman Roy Blunt (R-MO) was doing when he spoke to the Conservative Values Voters conference last weekend?  The congressman told an anecdote about the atmosphere in Washington D.C., comparing republicans to imperial British agents in India having to contend with a horde of monkeys.  Here’s an excerpt:

“I could go into great and long detail about how many things they did to try and eliminate the ‘monkey problem.’ But they never got it done, so finally this golf course and this golf course only, they passed a rule and the rule was – you have to play the ball where the monkey throws it. [audience laughter swells] And that is the rule in Washington all the time.”

You can see that part of his speech to the voters in the clip below.

While I am sensitive to anything that poisons an already toxic debate in Washington, I am not overly sensitive in cases like this.  Could he have used different words in describing his party’s fight?  Sure.  I don’t think this rises to the level of an out and out racist rant.  Believe me.  I know what those sound like.  What do you think?  Subtle racism, or plain old anecdote?

You know after a speech like that he’s going to raise a couple of millions by next week.

Absolutely. That’s probably one of the reasons why he made it.

I couldn’t put it any better Jackie. People don’t seem to care if they offend anyone anymore. At least have the decency to keep your hatred to yourself.

Thank you for coming to the blog. I hope to hear from you again.
