More validation of President Richard Nixon’s addled mind

June 24, 2009

This is from Ben Smith in Politico:

A remarkable bit of history from Charlie Savage, who is listening to newly released Nixon tapes:

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding: “Or a rape.”

Barack Obama was 11 at the time…

A new round of Richard Nixon tapes have been released by the National Archives, showing a more disturbed, paranoid, and frighteningly profane Nixon than ever before. How incredibly shocking is the above blurb?  This coming from the President of the United States?  These tapes provide a snapshot of the thinking of one of the most controversial men of the twentieth century, at a time of great change in our country.  They also give us something that we are never privy to:  the innermost thoughts of a president.  This is fascinating material.  Does it surprise anyone that our former president was a racist, anti-semite, and fear-mongerer?
